Would you like to enjoy feline companionship without the long-term or financial responsibility? Do you miss the pitter patter of little feet?

Foster parents provide temporary care for cats or kittens in their own home. Some cats will need care for as little as two weeks or less and some may be fostered for a few months. You can always decide when you're available to foster and for how long.

Usually we are looking for foster homes for kittens, especially during the busy spring and summer seasons. Kittens live in foster homes during the week and come into the adoption center on Saturdays until they are adopted. Often, we receive kittens that are a bit too young for adoption and need to spend a few weeks in a foster home. Once a kitten is at least 8 weeks of age and two pounds they can be spayed or neutered and made available for adoption.

Sometimes we receive a mother who is nursing a litter of kittens and she needs a safe place to raise her babies until they can be weaned.

The Cat's Meow provides all veterinary care and medications and is responsible for adoption placements.

Foster families provide love and care, including supplies like food and litter.

How Fostering Works

When we receive a cat or kitten that needs to be fostered we contact available foster parents. We will discuss the cat or kittens and the possible foster term. If you're not available or would rather not foster at that time there is no pressure. There will always be other opportunities to foster.

Foster parents pick up their new foster kitty at the Cat's Meow. You'll be given information on the cat's condition and needs.

Foster parents may need to bring the cat to the Cat's Meow periodically for medical treatments like vaccinations or spaying or neutering.

Foster parents are responsible for bringing the cat or kitten to the Cat's Meow for adoption on Saturdays when requested. Drop off is at 10 a.m. and any foster kitties that have not been adopted should be picked up by 4 p.m. We can arrange earlier or later times to accommodate your schedule.

Fostering is a rewarding experience and something that families can enjoy doing together.

The primary foster parent must be 18 or older, complete a volunteer questionnaire and liability release form and attend a brief orientation session. We prefer foster parents who live in Anacortes or nearby for easy transport to the adoption center when necessary. Foster parents must have their own transportation.

Time Commitment:

Fostering is a flexible commitment. The foster term can be anywhere from 2-6 weeks and you can always decide when you are available to foster or not.
